Valença, a walk through history
Valença is a city located on the course of the Miño river. In it you can learn part of the history of Spain and Portugal, thanks to its buildings dating from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The atmosphere of the city breathes antiquity, thanks to its Romanesque, baroque and neoclassical buildings that transmit the desire to unveil all the years of history that keeps the city.
Apart from this, you can always enjoy the local gastronomy, which is not to be underestimated. The more sporty will have the opportunity to walk the ecopista of Valença, which has a distance of 14 km and goes from Valença to Vilanova de Cerveira, where you can enjoy the views of the river Minho, as well as the surrounding nature.
What to see in Valença?
Here are the five places not to be missed in Valença:
- Valença Fortress: This large fortress built between the XVII and XVIII centuries forms a walled perimeter of 5 km. Inside it is a village full of life, with many stores and restaurants. From any point of the wall you can enjoy its artistic style, although if you approach the north side you can enjoy wonderful views of the river Minho.
- Museological center of Valença: Inside the fortress there is a museum, which is divided into two rooms, the archaeological room and the medieval room, where you can discover more about the local history. This museum is also used as a tourist center where you can find different tourist-cultural circuits which you can follow.
- Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Cabeça: Next to the river Minho is this sanctuary located on top of a small hill that provides a privileged area where nature takes center stage. At Easter a great pilgrimage is celebrated in the place, where you can enjoy a procession accompanied by good music.
- Church of Nossa Senhora de Mosteiró: This medieval building dating from the seventeenth century conveys a mystical atmosphere due to the surrounding vegetation and the ruins of the old convent, which is adjacent to the church, which is in perfect condition. Inside we find a small church with magnificent gilded carvings dominated by a large altarpiece located at the end of the church.
Apart from the above mentioned sanctuaries and monasteries there are plenty of other places you can visit, such as the Santuario do Monte do Faro, the Monastery of Ganfei, the Church of Santa Maria dos Anjos, the Military Chapel of Bom Jesus, etc.
