Ourense, a city full of surprises
Ourense is one of the great unknowns in the community of Galicia. It is the third largest city in population, with about 108,000 inhabitants, and it holds many surprises both in its historic center and in its surroundings.
Ourense was already populated in the military era, but it was in Roman times when it reached great splendor, according to various historians, due to the large amount of gold that was in the area, hence its name.
Today it is a modern, pleasant and lively city, ideal for spending a weekend.
What to see in Ourense?
Ourense’s attractions are divided between the historic centre of the city, where you can see the monuments, and the outskirts, where its famous hot springs are located, with water that reaches temperatures of up to 70º permanently, so be careful with your hands!
The five things you can’t miss in Ourense are:
- Thermal baths: On the outskirts of Ourense there are several thermal baths, some public and others private, where you can enjoy a bath at 36-38 degrees at any time of the year while you see the city in the background. You can’t miss it!
- San Martín Cathedral: If you like art, the Ourense Cathedral will not leave you indifferent. Built between 1160 and 1188, it is a large Romanesque and Gothic construction, which originally had three naves. In addition, its state of conservation is excellent.
- San Martín Square: It is a small square that gives access to the San Martín Cathedral, right in front of the steps of the North entrance, which gives it one of the best views.
- Ponte do Milenio: Another of the great attractions of Ourense are its bridges. The first one we present to you is of recent construction (2001) and has an elevation of up to 22 meters above the sea, which gives it incredible panoramic views, as well as its design.
- Ponte Romano: A few meters from the Ponte do Milenio is the Ponte Romano, one of the emblems of the city. It dates back to the time of Augustus and, although it has been rebuilt, some original stones remain at the base of the construction.
